Pardhi and Kanjarbhat

Sometimes I think I have a romantic notion of life in India. When I want to really just go back and adopt all these homeless children or empower the women folk or get the guys a job in a vast labor intensive firm that I would start up, I think it can all be solved. Partition the problem into smaller manageable chunks and you'll have a solution in no time. Take the Pardi community. Known and widely maligned for their criminal activities, their consequent isolation from mainstream society, they are one of the most backward class of people in India right now. The vicious cycle of crime and poverty does not cease; few seldom seem to get a break. Therefore, I was particularly happy to hear that a former police commissioner of B'bay had established a school just for kids from this community with able support from the CM of Maharashtra. long time no see

So now, this Blogger thing is a feature of google toolbar. What is google upto? make a writer out of all of us? I think it is a laudable effort but it also means that now we have even more of an information overload. We are turning into Borgs,the evil species of Star Trek saga, who believe in the ultimate form of unity -- merging of all minds so that each one listens to everyone.
Came back from an awesome trip to Japan and India. Left on Dec. 12th for the Land of the Rising Sun, arrived on the 13th night, travelled around Tokyo for a day, left for Osaka on the morning of the 14th to see Zakir, came back to Tokyo on the 18th to leave for India on the 19th. India was a blast BUT I'm not going to write everything here...I have an account on my webpage. Maybe I'll upload it here someday. In the mean while, here's something to chew on. Yesterday I was at a talk by Swami Jyotirmayananda who presented a homage to Swami Vivekananda on his 100th anniversary of departure from this material world. The presentation was actually a video-tape of a powerpoint slide show with voice-over. After the main presentation was over in about 30 mins, we got a bit edgy as there was not much to the homage other than platitutes to Swami Vivekananda.
